oil stains
Was it enough?
When I soiled my fingers
To light the fuse?
I longed
To burn down the wall
Of wax
Spilling between us
Like honey-thick silence
That stuck to our lungs
When we breathed it in
And kept the words
Pushed downAnd maybe,
I wanted you to weave your fingers in mine
So we could dance in the ashes
Like it was falling snow.Instead, you let the flames swallow you
While your gaze
Burned into my chest.
This is brilliant.
Angry Atheist Rant
For those of you who haven’t seen this story or some variation thereof, please check this out.
I can’t stand anecdotes such as these. Ironically, it casts the atheist professor as arrogant and pedantic when the Christian student in the story comes off just as cocky and pretentious.
Why I dislike this story: (Here’s a play by play.)
- “We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that.” Absolute zero is -459.67 Fahrenheit. It doesn’t even matter how you round, you can’t get to -458.
- “By the way, that student was EINSTEIN.” Though Einstein was not an atheist, he identified himself as an agnostic. Einstein did not say any of the above.
- “Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.” Electricity and magnetism may not be fully understood, but they can be measured and indirectly observed. You can’t draw a parallel between God and electricity/magnetism. To my knowledge, you cannot measure or observe God.
Ready for the part that really gets me?
Professor: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.”“
Humans did not evolve from monkeys. One year of science in junior high or high school should be sufficient to to clear up that misconception in even the thickest students. The author of this story severely needs a refresher on basic life science. Most students nowadays know that humans did not evolve from monkeys. Rather, monkeys are a distant relative of humans because we possibly share a common ancestor.
“Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir? Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor. Are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?”
Oh my golly, there is so much wrong with this I don’t even know where to start. As a matter of fact, yes, we have observed evolution with our own eyes. For example, pathogens that evolve to withstand our medicine. Insects that evolve to outsmart pesticide. Mosquitoes that adapted to the London Underground. There are so many examples out there.
Don’t you dare draw a parallel between religion and evolution. Evolution is observable and proven, whereas religion is a matter of faith for the fact that it cannot be observed and cannot be proven. They are two completely unrelated matters. Evolution cannot disprove religion, unless you’re a New Earth Creationist or something equally ridiculous. The Bible can be taken metaphorically, and if so interpreted, does not interfere with the concept of evolution at all. I don’t see why people feel the need to side with one or the other when both concepts are capable of coexisting.
“Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain? Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established Rules of Empirical, Stable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?”
Three letters, guys. MRI. Brains are perfectly observable. And when the professor becomes a cadaver, the coroner can feel, touch, and smell the dude’s brain to his heart’s content. This attack was absolutely uncalled for, and the logical flaws here… No. Just no.
And, as if foreseeing the attacks that point out such logical fallacies, the poster of the story has conveniently turned off comments.
I’m sorry but you can’t compare God or religion to science and concrete, observable matters. There’s a reason why it’s called “faith.” Christians, stop spreading false, error-ridden stories with absolutely no logic to justify your religion and put down atheists. Atheists, stop trying to disprove religion with science. It can’t be done. Also, please do some basic research before spreading annoying chainmail mabobs such as this.
